Cycle kamel mennour : Kwade and Nevelson's "Face to Face

Private visit with the curator

Description

The artists Louise Nevelson and Alicja Kwade were born eighty years apart, Nevelson in Kiev, Ukraine, in 1899, and Kwade in Katowice, Poland, in 1979. Galerie kamel mennour brings them together for a "Face to face" that we invite you to discover during a private visit with Erik Verhagen, the curator of the exhibition.

To know

It was not until 1959 that Louise Nevelson received recognition for her work.  She was invited to the Sixteen Americans exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, but found herself in a delicate position. The event marked the triumph of the post-expressionist abstract movements. But Nevelson did not bend to the mainstream and the aesthetic. She escapes the expectations of the art world and the zeitgeist with her very personal contribution, composed of a pristine white environment.

Alicja Kwade is equally unclassifiable and unpredictable. She seems to draw from a "personal" domain, not necessarily in the intimate sense of the term, but as a relationship to the world, to everyday objects, which she takes out of their contexts to destabilize and reconfigure the physical world.

This exhibition proposes to establish an unexpected dialogue between the two artists by focusing on a selection of Nevelson's wall pieces from the 1970s, to which Kwade has responded with his own works, either earlier or produced for the occasion, which take over the space, resting on the floor or, more rarely, on the walls.
